BRIGHTON - A Fort Lupton man was sentenced Friday to 14 years in prison for drunken driving and plowing his vehicle into another car, killing a passenger and injuring three others.

Adams County District Judge Harlan R. Bockman ordered Walter Zalas-Perez, 23, to serve 10 years in prison for vehicular homicide while driving under the influence and tacked on another four years for one count of vehicular assault.

The one count represents the three victims hurt in the crash.

Zalas-Perez pleaded guilty to the two counts in January.

When the deadly collision occurred on June 18, 2006, Zalas-Perez had another DUI and careless-driving case pending in Weld County, said Adams County Assistant District Attorney Michael Goodbee. Zalas-Perez was arrested by Colorado State Patrol troopers on March 25, 2006, for an alleged DUI.

Zalas-Perez was driving a vehicle on the frontage road along Interstate 76 about a half mile north of East Bromley Lane when he slammed head-on into a car carrying four people.

Killed in the crash was Ricky Bird, 20, who was a passenger in the front seat of the vehicle. The other three people suffered injuries.
