Rocky Mountain beats Chaparral, but everyone gets a taste of Coors Field
Published March 24, 2007 at midnight
Critics of Coors Field long have claimed that true baseball never is played at the park.
The claim carries some validity when high school teams visit, but for a vastly different reason. Because it could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience to play at the park, prep coaches make sure to empty their benches.
That was the case Friday, when Rocky Mountain blasted Chaparral 10-3 in a Class 5A nonleague game on the Rockies' home turf. For the fourth-ranked Lobos, the situation couldn't have been more ideal.
They jumped to a quick lead and scored in every inning, allowing coach Scott Bullock to liberally substitute with no concerns.
"It was a great opportunity to get out here and get everybody in the game," said Rocky Mountain sophomore third baseman Bryan Peters, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and pitched a scoreless inning. "We got all the seniors in and proved we're a good baseball team."
Rocky Mountain (3-0) received a 3-for-3 performance from shortstop Andy Burns and a two-run home run in the sixth by center fielder Jake Stewart, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Lobos pitcher Tony Rafiti was sharp in his initial start this season, striking out five of the nine batters he faced while allowing no hits and one walk. Rafiti had shutout-type stuff, but he was taken out after three innings so the Lobos could allow four pitchers to take the major league mound.
Rocky Mountain held No. 7 Chaparral (4-3) to no hits until Mike Frank led off the fifth with a bloop double. The Wolverines racked up three runs in the sixth but were trailing 8-0 entering the inning.
Chaparral coach Steve Eaton abides by the philosophy that when playing at Coors Field, it is more important to get everyone into the box score.
"Our primary thing down here is to give everybody the experience," Eaton said. "We tell them every year, it's our 18 against however many they want to play."
