CityLights Pavilion cancels '07 season

Scheduling conflicts blamed

Published March 24, 2007 at midnight

CityLights Pavilion will go dark, at least temporarily, after four years of hosting concerts on the grounds of Pepsi Center.

The tentlike summer-only concert venue officially canceled its entire 2007 season Friday because of scheduling conflicts with Cirque du Soleil, which shares space close to the pavilion. It'll likely stay closed during the summer of 2008 when the Pepsi Center hosts the Democratic National Convention, so 2009 is the soonest it will reopen.

The 4,500-seat pavilion generally hosts a couple of dozen acts a year and already has four dates booked for this year, including the Marshall Tucker Band and Weird Al Yankovic.

Booker Live Nation and landowner Kroenke Sports, partners in the venue, announced Friday morning that the season was canceled.

In the past, the venue has hosted the likes of Elvis Costello and John Fogerty, overcoming its reputation as "a tent in a parking lot." This season's announced lineup so far, however, has been primarily oldies acts such as Herman's Hermits.

Officials wouldn't comment on those shows, which presumably will be moved to other venues.

Concert promoter Live Nation recently merged with House of Blues, giving it another outdoor venue in Coors Amphitheatre. Live Nation also has been the promoter that booked the most shows at Red Rocks in past years and controls the Paramount Theatre and the Fillmore Auditorium.
