Faith Christian stuns Ottoson, Eaton

Eagles hand ace first loss at the high school level

ARVADA - Faith Christian's baseball team shed a dubious distinction Thursday - and stopped a remarkable achievement by Eaton's Kyle Ottoson.

It was difficult to categorize which was the grander accomplishment, but the top-ranked Eagles couldn't have had one without the other.

An 11-8 home win halted a nine-game winless streak against the Reds, who have become the most storied Class 3A team in the past 1 1/2 decades. Faith Christian entered 0-8-1 all time against Eaton.

More surprising was the pitcher Faith Christian defeated in the game between the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams. Ottoson entered unbeaten in high school at 20-0, including 2-0 this season. But Faith Christian totaled nine hits and eight runs (six earned) off him.

"That kid's a great pitcher; he's got some really good stuff," said Faith Christian center fielder David Fox, who went 3-for-3 with three RBI, including a triple off the 385-foot marker in left-center field. "We're just happy to have another 'W,' especially against Eaton because they're a great team and (Reds coach Jim) Danley runs a great program."

Eaton (3-1) looked to be rolling early, collecting eight hits in the first two innings en route to a 5-2 lead, including a home run by third baseman Drew Smith. But Faith Christian starter Josh Anderson settled down and the Eagles scored the next nine runs to take command at 11-5.

Seve Carbajal's two-out RBI double in the fourth gave the Eagles (4-0) their first lead at 6-5.

"This is a strong veteran team Faith Christian put out there, and they played well," said Danley, whose Reds are youthful but still powerful this season.

"We hope that if we keep working hard, we can become as good as they are by the end of the season."
