Dylla, Kim put on a show, shatter records
Published March 23, 2007 at midnight
AURORA - Jay Kim won't finish second very often this season, but Thursday was an exception for the Regis swimmer. With Class 5A No. 3 Heritage and six-time state champion Mark Dylla visiting the Regis pool, the fierce competition inspired Kim and Dylla to rewrite the pool's record book.
The two seniors brought the crowd to its feet in the 100-yard butterfly, with Dylla edging Kim to win the event in 49.3 seconds. Both Dylla and Kim (49.79) topped Dylla's record of 49.89, set last year.
"I wanted to come in under 50 seconds, and I expected that," said Dylla. "Obviously, it helps to compete against somebody like Kim. He's trying to see what he can do now as opposed to later, and there is nothing wrong with that."
Kim wanted to win the event, but he said it was good to see the state's best competition early.
"The goal was to catch Dylla, but I have no regrets," he said. "It was a great day."
Regis, the top-ranked team in the state with 12 consecutive team state titles, scored 111 points to the Eagles' 75, and Kim and Dylla set more pool records. Kim finished the 200 freestyle event in 1:41.56, topping Luke Wagner's pool record of 1:43.06, set in 2000.
"That's my best time for the entire year, and its not my best event," Kim said.
Dylla broke another of his pool records in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 1:52.69. He had set the previous mark in 2005.
Dylla said he skipped going to Junior National competition this year so he could be with his team against the Raiders. His actions Thursday were more like an assistant coach to Heritage coach Tom Byorick, helping to organize and motivate his Eagles teammates.
"No question, Regis is the best, and we're just trying to compete and gauge where we are right now," he said.
Dylla said he didn't mind missing Junior Nationals because he's trying to help Heritage to its best finish in the school's history.
"You can't be at every meet," he said. "Heritage has never placed higher than fourth place at state. That's our goal. . . . We're trying to move up."
