Arapahoe, Mountain Vista bruise way to tie
Published March 23, 2007 at midnight
LITTLETON - Lauren Cavarra and her teammates on the Arapahoe girls soccer team are looking forward to next week's spring break, not only for the time off from school, but also for a chance to recover from Thursday night's brutal battle with Mountain Vista.
Fourth-ranked Arapahoe and the sixth-ranked Golden Eagles fought to a 0-0 double-overtime tie in a battle that left both teams worse for wear.
Cavarra sported a burn on her knee, while teammate Megan Flannery suffered a concussion.
Mountain Vista didn't come away injury-free.
Golden Eagles coach Theresa Echtermeyer said senior defender Courtney Thomas broke a wrist.
While unsatisfied with the tie, both teams were happy with the effort.
"Playing against a team like (Mountain Vista), the game is going to be brutal and we knew that," Cavarra said. "We definitely could have gotten some balls in and put some goals on the board. We just needed to execute better."
Most of the contest was played in the middle of the field. Arapahoe (4-1-1) finished with two shots on goal while the Golden Eagles (3-1-1) only had one.
"It was a defensive battle, that's for sure," Echtermeyer said.
"We're definitely disappointed; we always want to win. And its always nice to beat Arapahoe because they set the bar so high."
The first shot on goal didn't come until the 61st minute, when Cavarra launched a shot from 28 yards out.
The Golden Eagles' only shot on goal came in the 80th minute, when Karter Haug fired a shot from the left side that took a strange bounce and caused some trouble for Arapahoe keeper Katie Swanson but eventually was controlled.
