Incident seen as abduction try
Published March 22, 2007 at midnight
One of three weekend incidents in which men approached children is being investigated as an attempted abduction, Commerce City police said Wednesday.
Detectives don't think the three incidents, which occurred in Commerce City's northern subdivisions of Frontera Village, Reunion and Buffalo Run, are related, Lt. Chuck Saunier said.
Detectives believe the first encounter, which happened Friday afternoon, was an attempted abduction. An 8-year-old boy told police he was on the playground at Second Creek Elementary School, 9950 Laredo Drive, about 4:30 p.m. when a man driving a red Pontiac Grand Am parked nearby.
The youngster walked over to the vehicle because he thought the person inside might be a relative. As he got close the driver told him, "Hop in, your mom said to give you a ride," police said.
The boy became frightened, ran home and told his mother, who phoned police.
In the second incident, a man asked a 9-year-old girl if she wanted to pet his dog that was in his SUV. The child became scared, returned home and told her mother, who called 911.
And on Sunday about 6:30 p.m., a late 1990s white, four- door Ford Escort with two men inside pulled up beside two girls, both 7, near a park at East 117th Place and Fairplay Drive. One man rolled down the window to talk to the girls. When a parent hurried to the children, the car drove away, police said.
Anyone with information about the incidents should call police at 303-287-2844.
