Medlen still 'critical' after NHRA crash

National Hot Rod Association driver Eric Medlen remained in critical condition Wednesday, days after a test-session crash at Gainesville Raceway in Florida.

Doctors at the University of Florida medical center performed a three-hour brain surgery Tuesday night to relieve pressure and hemorrhaging, and Medlen will be in a drug-induced coma for two weeks, his racing team said on its Web site.

Medlen, a 33-year-old California native, drives for John Force Racing.

LPGA BAN LIST REVEALED The

LPGA Tour released the list of substances it will ban when it begins drug testing next year.

The tour said it will test for 33 anabolic steroids, 29 stimulants and 20 beta blockers, among other substances. The list is not as comprehensive as the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list, but LPGA Tour general counsel Jill Pilgrim said the tour wanted to target drugs that would enhance golf performance.

NO DISCIPLINE PLANNED The University of Illinois will not discipline athletic director Ron Guenther for yelling at men's basketball coach Bruce Weber and Illini players during the team's NCAA Tournament loss Friday.

Guenther yelled substitution advice to Weber, who was just a few feet away, and also yelled, "Warren - you idiot," after a play by Illini forward Warren Carter, according to a report on CBS Sportsline.com.

TAR HEELS' TERRY AILING North Carolina senior Reyshawn Terry has been diagnosed with strep throat but was expected to play against Southern California in their East Regional semifinal game Friday night.

MICHIGAN PAIR ARRAIGNED Two Michigan football players were arraigned on assault charges after police say they attacked a fellow student in a residence hall St. Patrick's Day.

Carson Butler, of Detroit, and Christian Richards III, of Pacoima, Calif., were charged with one count each of aggravated assault, as well as assault and battery, campus police spokeswoman Diane Brown said.

SHAUGHNESSY, KUERTEN LOSE American tennis player Meghann Shaughnessy lost in her opening match at the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla., to 14-year-old Michelle Lar- cher de Brito of Portugal, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

Three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten lost to Raemon Sluiter 6-2, 6-2.

MAURESMO HAS SURGERY Amelie Mauresmo had an appendectomy and is expected to be sidelined a month. The fourth- ranked Frenchwoman underwent surgery in Paris.

AUSTRALIA TO TEST LIQUID Australia's anti-doping agency will test a clear liquid found in a hotel that is home to a number of teams in the world swimming championships.

A small box containing vials of a clear liquid was found Tuesday in a common room at Melbourne's Parkview Hotel. Police said small traces of illicit drugs were found in the box, but not in the vials.

DERBY PROSPECT INJURED Sham Stakes winner Ravel has an injured left front leg and is off the Kentucky Derby trail. Ravel, a winner in two of three career starts under trainer Todd Pletcher, injured his left front cannon bone, which lies between the knee and the fetlock joint.

NO CONCLUSIONS IN DEATH Forensic experts in Kingston, Jamaica, searched for evidence in the hotel room where Bob Woolmer, Pakistan's cricket coach, died under what police called "suspicious" circumstances, but authorities said they had reached no conclusions.

OHIO SOCCER PLAYER DIES A 20- year-old Ohio University women's soccer player on spring break fell from a fifth-floor balcony at her hotel in Hilton Head Island, S.C., and died.

Witnesses told authorities that Sarah Merritt was climbing from the balcony of one room to another at the Comfort Inn & Suites when she fell about 60 feet, Beaufort County sheriff's Capt. Bob Bromage said.

TRACK COACH DIES Tom Jones, the longtime Florida women's track and field coach who tutored a handful of Olympic athletes, died after battling cancer, the school said. He was 62.
