Mike Croell was no stranger to the postseason, but he had no inkling about what it was like to be the last team standing.

After 11 seasons of near misses, Croell and the Broomfield girls basketball team finally got their title.

Croell-coached Eagles squads never have missed the round of eight and have participated in four final fours and three championship games.

But until their 61-43 win against Harrison in the Class 4A championship game at the Coors Events Center this year, Broomfield officials never have had to clear room in the school's trophy case.

"We've always been pretty good, always been in the thick of things, but there's been some heartbreak," Croell said.

"I don't know if you can say we were due; I just think this team had the right mind-set from Day 1."

The Eagles, led by seniors Katie Calderwood and

Caitlan Stem and a dynamic corps of sophomores, shook off the school's sketchy history in big games, and Croell knows what made this group different.

"Just the overall balance," he said. "On any given night, any one, two or three of them could really have a great night. And they played very well together. There was no selfishness out there."

An example of that was illustrated by Stem, who went scoreless in the semifinals against Berthoud while setting up center Anna Prins for several easy baskets.

In the championship game, Stem scored 23.
