Neville: Chaney didn't court this, but he enjoyed it

Coby Chaney's prime-time moment came with the Green Mountain basketball team 15 years ago when he was the Rams' state championship most valuable player. These days, Chaney is the Director of Administration at the Gold Crown Foundation. He also is a basketball official, and the Denver East-Aurora Central Class 5A championship was his first title-game assignment. "I was surprised and honored when I got the call, and since it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I would be lying if I didn't admit I was a little nervous. Then, as I watched the players during warm-ups, I couldn't help but get excited for them, knowing exactly what they were going through." The hardest part of the night was having some of his old championship teammates at the game. "They heckled me like crazy, especially about some of my early calls, when I came out of the tunnel at halftime. But, it just added to the fun of the experience."
WNBA DREAMS: When a Fort Collins ownership group recently announced plans to try and bring women's professional basketball back to Colorado, several former prep stars and current WNBA players immediately spoke out in support. Both Jamie Carey and Katie Cronin were Ms. Basketball Player of the Year winners from Horizon. Said Carey, who currently plays for the Connecticut Sun and was an assistant for the Hawks this season: "Colorado communities have fanatically supported women's basketball through the years. This has the potential to be a great addition to an already strong WNBA league." The Chicago Sky's Cronin added, "I think it's great the WNBA is considering expanding. Many fans have been waiting to see a team here in Colorado." Current plans would add the Colorado Chill to the league in the summer of 2008.
PRIME TIME: Being back in the CU Coors Events Center for the state basketball championships sparked some good memories for Legacy girls coach Jody Welch. When she was a sophomore, Welch and her Northglenn teammates won the state title. "It was 20 years ago this weekend, exactly, that we won," she remembered. Then, continuing, she pointed to the far end of the court. "That's where I was interviewed during the live telecast, after we'd won. Right in that corner!" Who would have guessed she would be back on the same floor doing interviews again. Two decades later, she was talking about her Lightning team making it to its first title game.
