GAME DAY

Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki doubled to drive in a run and scored another in a four-run fourth inning against Ted Lilly that lifted the Rockies to a 4-2 victory against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday at Hi Corbett Field. Tulowitzki, who also singled in the second inning, is hitting .361 this spring training. . . . Matt Holliday, who doubled, singled and walked, scored a run in his fifth consecutive game. He is hitting .371. . . . The Rockies played their fifth consecutive errorless game. They have committed 18 errors in 20 games.

HEALING

Right-handed pitcher Dave Veres, his comeback from hip replacement surgery sidetracked by a strained muscle in his right forearm, said he has been given clearance to resume a strengthening program.

He hopes to start facing batters by the end of next week but admitted he will start the season in extended spring training.

"Obviously, any chance of Opening Day is shot," Veres said. "There's no need to try and hurry up things because I won't make (Opening Day) anyway."

READY TO GO

Second baseman Kaz Matsui, who had strained his right foot, and outfielder Ryan Spilborghs, who had twisted his left ankle, each played five innings in a minor league game and were given clearance to resume playing for the major league team today. They each went 3-for-5.

"We wanted them to see live pitching before getting involved in an 'A' game," manager Clint Hurdle said. "Now we can move forward."

HE SAID IT

"The guy signed in 2005 and was in the big leagues in 2006. That's quick. We like what we are seeing from him right now."
