Sexual assault case gets underway

Published March 20, 2007 at midnight

GOLDEN - Jury selection got underway today in the case of a Denver deputy sheriff accused of fondling a 14-year-old neighbor girl more than a year ago.

John Luna, 45, is charged with two counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and one count of attempted sexual assault in connection with the Jan. 3, 2006, incident.

Luna denies the allegation.

Defense attorney Gary Lozow says the charges result from a long-standing disagreement between the victim's family and the Luna family who are neighbors.

The alleged victim told Wheat Ridge police that Luna touched her inappropriately and made sexual suggestions while giving her a ride to work.

The victim also alleges that Luna grabbed her and began groping her before she broke away and ran from Luna's truck.

After she fled the truck, the girl said, she called her mother who told her to notify police.
