Fire to keep school closed through Wednesday
Published March 20, 2007 at midnight
Bear Creek High School students will miss class at least through Wednesday as crews continue to mop the damage and debris caused by a weekend fire.
The interior of the campus remains smoky, and Jefferson County School District officials said they decided to close the school because of health concerns. Cleanup crews also are having to deal with a large amount of soot that has stained walls and furniture.
About 1,880 students attend Bear Creek high.
"We want to make sure its healthy for the kids to come back, and theres a lot of cleanup work," Lynn Setzer, the school district spokeswoman, said.
The blaze started late Saturday in a classroom where ceramic crafts are done by students. Rooms on either side of where the fire began also sustained heavy damage, Setzer said. In the lower level, a pipe that burst as firefighters attempted to extinguish the blaze caused more damage.
Setzer said the district will make up this weeks missed classes with makeup days on April 2 and 27 when they were scheduled to be off. The students are headed to spring break next week.
Meantime, investigators from West Metro Fire Rescue continued to interview students and school administrators to determine whether anyone was in the ceramics class earlier on Saturday and what types of activities were being done during the week in an attempt to learn what might have caused the fire, Micki Trost, West Metro Fire spokeswoman, said.
