Fire damages mayor’s official home

Published March 20, 2007 at midnight

A passing ambulance crew alerted the Denver Fire Department after smelling smoke about 3:30 a.m. coming from Cableland, the official residence of Denver’s mayor.

Denver fire spokesman Phil Champagne said when the first crews arrived, smoke was pouring out of the pool mechanical room and the pool’s boiler room.

He said 36 firefighters were trying to determine if the fire had extended into the interior of the 19,500-square-foot mansion donated to the city by the late cable TV mogul Bill Daniels.

Cableland, located near Leetsdale Drive and South Colorado Boulevard, is used for nonprofit groups' fund-raising events and city functions. Mayor John Hickenlooper doesn’t actually live there.

It is equipped with 88 televisions, 97 telephones as well as a grand room for 200 people, a dining room, and multi-level outdoor pool.

A caretaker who lives at the home was not injured.
