Dolphins' Porter charged with battery

Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter was accused of punching Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Levi Jones after police said the players exchanged words at a blackjack table in Las Vegas.

Porter, a former Colorado State defensive end, was issued a summons on a misdemeanor battery charge after the Sunday altercation that began inside the Palms hotel-casino, Las Vegas police officer Martin Wright said.

"They went outside. In the valet area, one struck the other, causing a small laceration above the eye," Wright said.

Porter could face up to one year in jail and up to a $1,000 fine.

SAFETY ARRESTED Jacksonville Jaguars safety Gerald Sensabaugh was arrested in Kingsport, Tenn., and charged with speeding and carrying a firearm without a permit.

NEW YORK BRAWL Fights between fans during a championship high school basketball game at Madison Square Garden turned into a melee that spilled into the streets and subways, drawing police on horses and in riot gear.

Gunfire was heard as the crowd went from the arena Sunday night to Times Square, but no injuries were reported.

About 21 people, mostly teens, were arrested, police said. Some were charged with disorderly conduct or resisting arrest.

LOPEZ STAYING Stanford center Brook Lopez will remain in school for his sophomore season instead of declaring for the NBA draft.

ILLINOIS STATE HIRE Kansas assistant coach Tim Jankovich, a onetime Colorado State assistant under former Rams coach Boyd Grant, has accepted the men's basketball coaching job at Illinois State.

BARNES HIRED Former Mississippi coach Rod Barnes was hired as the men's basketball coach at Georgia State.

DiCECCO RESIGNS Northern Iowa women's basketball coach Tony DiCecco resigned after 12 seasons for health reasons.

GAMECOCKS DISMISSED South Carolina baseball coach Ray Tanner dismissed star freshmen outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall and reliever Nick Fuller from the team after they were charged with breaking into a dorm room and stealing electronic equipment.

CLARK RETIRES Three-time Olympian Kirsten Clark, the only skier to win four consecutive U.S. downhill titles, will retire after this month's U.S. alpine championships.

MUSHER DISQUALIFIED Two-time Iditarod runner-up Ramy Brooks has been disqualified from this year's race for abusing his dogs, officials said.

Brooks, 38, hit each of his 10 dogs with a trail marking lathe, similar to a surveyor's stake, after two refused to get up and continue running. Alaska State Troopers said they have no plans to investigate or press charges against Brooks.

POUND ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY Canadian lawyer Dick Pound, who steps down as World Anti-Doping Agency chief in November, said he is a candidate to become the president of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the highest tribunal in the sports world.

DRIVERS APPROVED The U.S. Golf Association approved new drivers from Nike to replace some Sumo Squared drivers that did not meet the organization's regulations.

RACER INJURED NHRA driver Eric Medlen, 33, was critically injured when his funny car crashed into a guard rail during a test session at Gainesville (Fla.) Raceway.

FA CUP QUARTERFINALS Chelsea advanced to the semifinals of The Football Association Cup by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in a quarterfinal replay, while Manchester United also advanced with a 1-0 win against Middlesbrough.
