Communities mourn teen crash victims
Samaritan stop kills 3 from Durango, Bayfield
Published March 20, 2007 at midnight
Schools in Durango and Bayfield on Monday were mourning the deaths of three teens killed in a crash stemming from a good Samaritan stop south of Hesperus.
A child and an adult were seriously injured.
Killed in the accident, just before midnight Saturday, were Larry Michael Romero, 18, of Durango, and Carly Martin, 16, and her 13-year-old stepbrother, Raymond Millich Jr., both of Bayfield.
Samuel Aaron Romero, 11, Larry Romero's cousin, also of Durango, and Matthew Goodson, 33, of Hesperus, were seriously injured, Colorado State Patrol Trooper Chad Martin said Monday.
Martin said he believed that Larry Romero was Carly Martin's boyfriend.
A New Mexico man, who may have fallen asleep at the wheel, was arrested on charges of careless driving, the trooper said.
The State Patrol gave this account:
Octabino Romero, 30, of Durango, was driving an Isuzu Trooper carrying the three teens and the 11-year-old.
Octabino Romero was going to help his friend Goodson, whose vehicle apparently was disabled, at Colorado 140 south of Hesperus, about 22 miles north of the New Mexico line.
Octabino Romero (who is Samuel Romero's father and Larry Romero's uncle), got out to help Goodson, and a few minutes later, La Plata County Deputy Sheriff Jake Yeager stopped to assist them, Martin said.
All three vehicles were at the entrance to a private driveway just off the highway.
A pickup truck driven by Eugene J. Chavez, 25, of Albuquerque, went off the right side of the road into the barrow ditch, up the driveway embankment and slammed into the Isuzu, Martin said.
The SUV was spun around by the impact and hit Goodson, while Octabino Romero and Yeager escaped injury.
Chavez and his passenger, William A. Mckibben 29, also of Albuquerque, were treated for minor injuries and released from Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. Goodson was taken to Denver Health, where he was listed in fair condition Monday, while Samuel Romero was flown to Children's Hospital, where no information was available.
Chavez was booked early Sunday into the La Plata County Jail on three counts of careless driving resulting in death and three counts of careless driving resulting in injury. He posted $4,500 bail.
Counselors were on hand Monday at Durango High School, where Larry Romero was a junior. In Bayfield, counselors spent much of the day in the high school, where Carly Martin was a freshman, and in the middle school, where Raymond Millich was in seventh grade.
A fund for the mother of Carly Martin and Raymond Millich was was set up at Pine River Valley Bank, as the Cindi Oliver Benefit Fund. The bank's address is 301 N. Commerce, Bayfield, CO 81122.
