Three teenagers were killed Saturday night when they were hit by a passing pickup truck while sitting in a vehicle parked in a driveway near Durango.
The Durango Herald reports that Larry Michael Romero, 18, of Durango, along with a 16-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy, both from Bayfield, were killed instantly. Their names havent been released.
A fourth passenger in the vehicle, an 11-year-old boy, was airlifted to Childrens Hospital in Denver with serious injuries. A man, Matthew Goodson, 33, of Hesperus also was injured and taken to Denver Health Medical Center.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, the crash happened about 11:45 p.m. after a La Plata County Sheriff's deputy stopped to investigate two vehicles, an Isuzu Trooper and a pickup, that were parked in a private driveway along U.S. 140 south of Hesperus, about 22 miles north of the New Mexico border.
As the deputy was talking to Goodson and Octabino Ramero, 30, of Durango, along the side of the highway, a 1999 Ford pickup went off the right side of the road, through a ditch and up the driveway embankment, hitting the back of the Isuzu.
Romero and the three juveniles, who were all in the parked Isuzu, were thrown out as it made a half turn while skidding 130 feet. All died upon impact.
The skidding vehicle hit Goodson but missed Ramero and the trooper. The Ford rolled once, coming to rest 145 feet from the accident scene. The occupants, driver Eugene J. Chavez, 25, and passenger William A. Mckibben, 29, both of Albuquerque, were transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center, treated and released.
According to a news release, alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash.
