GAME DAY
The Texas Rangers scored eight runs in the seventh and beat the Rockies 12-8. Brad Hawpe and Matt Holliday hit two-run home runs for the Rockies and Cory Sullivan went 4-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. Matt Herges, unscored on in his previous 5 1/3 innings, allowed four hits and five runs while retiring two of the seven batters he faced. He gave up a two-run homer to Nate Gold. Ramon Ramirez relieved Herges and gave up two walks and a grand slam to Matt Kata.
DAMAGE CONTROL
Jeff Francis, who became the first Rockies pitcher to work six innings, allowed 11 hits and four runs. He never retired the Rangers in order.
"I really didn't have a feel for much," Francis said. "I wasn't getting ahead in the count. I wasn't throwing a lot of quality strikes with my fastball, where I wanted them to be. Not ideal, I guess, but could've been a lot worse."
RARE SIGHTING
With the Rockies off today, Todd Helton played in his first game outside Tucson. He singled twice in four at-bats to keep his spring training average at .500.
PITCHING PLANS
Rodrigo Lopez will pitch on his normal fifth day today by starting in a minor league camp game on one of the back fields at Hi Corbett Field.
