Former deputy charged in child porn case
Published March 19, 2007 at midnight
A former Arapahoe County sheriff's deputy facing federal child pornography charges wrote an Internet message that it is God's will that kids be trained sexually at birth, according to logs taken from the suspect's computer.
Douglas Morrill Peek, 53, of Centennial, is charged with one count each of transporting, possessing, distribution and receipt of child pornography.
Magistrate Michael Hegarty was told of the logs during a detention hearing in federal court today. Hegarty ordered Peek to remain behind bars.
Authorities arrested Peek on Feb. 27 and confiscated his computer, which contained more than 1,000 pieces of child pornography, including pictures and video, FBI agent Michelle Velasquez told Hegarty. Some of the pictures depicted sexual acts with infants and adults having intercourse with children younger than 10, Velasquez said.
Peek is accused of using several different screen names and contacting pedophiles across the country. He encouraged parents to molest their daughters and exchanged phone numbers with a father who was soliciting his children, said Habib Nasrullah, an assistant U.S. attorney.
Peek has gotten therapy for his addiction before, said his attorney, Arthur Schwartz. His ex-girlfriend said she trusted his grandchildren with Peek and there was no evidence of Peek committing any sexual acts on children or his daughters, Schwartz said.
Peek worked with the Arapahoe County Detention Bureau from March 21, 1996, until Jan. 3, when he resigned.
He had been suspended from duty Oct. 31, when the sheriff's office learned of the allegations.
The case is being prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in February 2006 to protect children from online exploitation and abuse.
