Coby Karl to have more cancer surgery

Published March 19, 2007 at midnight

Coby Karl, son of Nuggets coach George Karl, is scheduled to have surgery April 2 to remove cancerous lymph nodes that were discovered several weeks ago.

The operation at St. Al's Hospital in Boise, Idaho, will be the second in 13 months for Karl, who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last year.

According to news release from Boise State University, one in 10 thyroid cancer patients require follow-up surgery. Karl's prognosis for recovery is considered "excellent," according to the university.

The Karl family has been coping with cancer since George Karl was diagnosed with prostate cancer in April 2005. The elder Karl had surgery a few months later and has had no reported complications since.

Coby Karl, 23, recently completed his senior season at Boise State. He was named to the All-Western Athletic Conference first team after averaging 14.8 points and 4.1 rebounds for the Broncos.

As he did when he learned he had thyroid cancer last year, Karl did not share the news with his teammates until after the season ended.

Karl plans to play in the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star game on March 31, and he is expected to recover from surgery in time for the NBA pre-draft camp in Orlando, Fla., May 29-June 4.

Karl, a 6-foot-4 guard, finished as the third-leading scorer in Boise State history. He potentially could be a second-round pick in the June 28 draft.
