Unruly passenger charged

Published March 17, 2007 at midnight

A 59-year-old New Jersey man was charged today with interfering with a flight crew after the Continental Airlines flight he was on had to be diverted to Denver International Airport.

According to a criminal complaint, Frederick W. Murphy was drunk and began grabbing a flight attendant while on board a Newark to Los Angeles flight Thursday night.

Murphy became angry when the flight crew refused to serve him more wine, and started kicking walls and tray tables, the complaint states. At one point, he said he had a gun.

A passenger grabbed Murphy as he was moving toward the cockpit, according to court documents.

Murphy appeared in federal court in Denver this morning. He was released on bond and scheduled to appear in court again on March 28. If convicted, Murphy could face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
