GAME DAY
The Rockies lost 11-7 to the San Francisco Giants as Byung-Hyun Kim allowed eight hits and eight runs in 4 2/3 innings. John Mabry, a left-handed hitter batting .381 and fighting for a spot on the bench, homered against left-hander Steve Kline. Jeff Baker hit his third homer of the spring, a two-run shot off Tim Lincecum and went 3-for-5. He's hitting .333 (11-for-33) with a .667 slugging percentage. . . . Matt Herges has not been scored upon in 5 1/3 innings this spring, including 1 2/3 innings in relief of Kim. . . . Left-hander Mike Gallo's scoreless string ended at five innings when he worked the seventh and gave up a solo homer to Tomas De La Rosa.
SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER
Manager Clint Hurdle said infielder Omar Quintanilla, who hit .210 in 34 at-bats with the Rockies the past two seasons, has made notable strides at the plate this spring. He went 2-for-4, raising his average to .333 (7-for-21) before being optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs after the game.
"Offensively, this has been his finest hour for me," Hurdle said, "watching him on a daily basis. Hard, consistent contact has definitely come his way more often than not this spring. "
PITCHING PLANS
Brian Lawrence threw four innings and 60 pitches Thursday in a minor league game. He'll make his second Cactus League appearance - the other was March 10 - in his next outing Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs at Hi Corbett Field. Rodrigo Lopez will pitch that morning in a "B" game against the Chicago White Sox at Hi Corbett Field.
ROSTER MOVES
The Rockies optioned pitchers Denny Bautista and Ryan Speier, catcher Alvin Colina and Quintanilla to Triple-A Colorado Springs and optioned pitcher Darren Clarke to Double-A Tulsa. The Rockies have 42 players in big- league camp, including 12 non-roster players.
PAYDAY $9 million dollars (well, nearly) is the price for which the Rockies' Steve Finley and his wife, Amy, sold their Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., home, according to The Wall Street Journal. The 10,000- square-foot home sits on almost five acres.
