Arapahoe's instinct settles overtime semifinal standoff
Published March 17, 2007 at midnight
LITTLETON - Arapahoe's Kaitlin Bast said it was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time.
Bast scored a goal with less than 3 minutes to play in the second overtime period to lift the second-ranked Warriors to a 2-1 victory against No. 7 Cherry Creek in the semifinals of the Warrior Invitational soccer tournament Friday night at Littleton Public Schools Stadium.
Bast's score ended a surprisingly physical battle that left both teams battered and bruised. As time wound down in the second overtime session, the Bruins were called for a foul near midfield. Arapahoe sent the ball toward the Cherry Creek goal, and Danielle Solich headed it forward to Bast, who buried the winner.
"It was all a team effort; I just happened to be there," said Bast, a sophomore. "It was just instinct. I'm not sure what happened."
Cherry Creek struck first in regulation, putting a goal on the board in the 70th minute. Arianne Heaton sent a corner kick into the center of the Arapahoe box, which was punched out by a Warriors defender. The Bruins' Tracy Roos was able to quickly push the ball back into the box, where Kelly McDermatt was waiting to hammer it into the back of the net.
Arapahoe wasted little time in getting the equalizer as Brittany Froistad scored a minute later. Froistad attempted a shot toward the near post, but it went off the side of her foot, freezing the Cherry Creek keeper. Somehow, the ball snuck inside the far post, evening the score at 1-1.
There were several other good chances in regulation, but the Bruins had the best one midway through the second half. Kaylee Boryla chipped a pass to herself, allowing her to get behind the Arapahoe defense. She fired an odd-angled shot from just inside the box that was saved by keeper Katie Swanson's sliding stop. Swanson had to quickly regain her footing, as the ball settled in front of a charging Heaton, who smashed a point-blank shot that Swanson took the brunt of.
