NUMBERS GAME

165 pitches thrown by Tampa Bay left-hander Scott Kazmir in eight innings of his first three spring training starts. Kazmir was shut down the final six weeks last season. Roy Halladay needed 36 pitches to work four perfect innings for Toronto in his recent start against Minnesota.

MISJUDGING THE MARKET

Left-hander Mark Redman admitted he priced himself out of the market in the offseason, but he got a chance to get back into the game this month when Atlanta left-hander Mike Hampton pulled a muscle in his left side.

The Braves signed Redman for $750,000 to fill the rotation void and Redman made it clear he was ready, pitching three innings in an exhibition game the first day he was in camp.

HE SAID IT

"I haven't had the opportunity to go out and prove that the game is over for me. In my eyes, as a fighter, as a player, you fight to the end."

Rickey Henderson, career stolen base leader, in camp with the Mets as an instructor but still wanting to play.
