Measure would protect domestic violence victims
Published March 16, 2007 at midnight
Lawmakers said Thursday that they will introduce a bill that would allow victims of domestic violence to list a fake address to protect them from harassment.
House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, D-Denver, said the bill will prevent assailants from tracking their victims.
"I talked to victims who fear for their lives every day," Romanoff said.
The bill would allow victims of actual or threatened domestic violence, sexual crimes and stalking to apply to the Secretary of State to keep their real addresses confidential in public records, including voting records.
Instead, the Secretary of State would assign them a fake address that would appear on all public and state records.
All mail sent to the fake address would be sent to the Secretary of State, who would forward it to the real address.
Romanoff said 21 states have similar programs.
