Golden is no-hit by Doyle

Right-hander is overpowering in Wheat Ridge win

Published March 16, 2007 at midnight

LAKEWOOD - After walking the first batter Thursday, Wheat Ridge pitcher Adam Doyle merely wanted to settle down and find his command.

Five innings later at All-Star Park, Doyle had accomplished more than that.

In his first start of the season, the senior right-hander fired a no-hitter as the Farmers walloped Golden 10-0 in a nonleague game shortened by two innings because of the 10-run rule.

"Our defense showed up and played great behind me," said Doyle, who struck out seven and walked two. "It couldn't have been possible without that."

Doyle walked Jeff Walker to lead off the game, but the Farmers, ranked seventh in Class 5A, turned a double play two batters later. He issued a walk to Anthony Carbone in the second, then retired the final 10 batters he faced.

Asked if his stuff was dominating or if it was more a matter of it being an early-season contest, Doyle said: "I think it could have been both parts of that. Teams haven't seen that much pitching yet."

Golden, ranked eighth in 4A, only yielded four hits. The Demons (1-1), though, walked six batters and plunked four.

Wheat Ridge (2-0) made the most of its few hits, receiving a two-run single from Jeff Nadeau in the first, a two-run home run from Kenny Swanson in the second and a two-run double by Matt Wright in the third.

That was more than enough for Doyle.

"Adam was throwing hard; that's the hardest we've seen this year," Golden coach Brad Madden said. "I can't throw that hard in B.P."

Wheat Ridge made sure to obey baseball's unwritten rule of not talking about a no-hitter during the game after jinxing Doyle in a similar situation last season.

"I didn't really realize it until that last inning, so I just kept my mouth quiet," said Nadeau, the Farmers right fielder. "We (talked about it during a game) last year with Doyle pitching and kind of blew it."

Doyle wasn't about to blow it Thursday, appearing stronger as the game progressed on a chilly, windswept afternoon.

"The victory was the No. 1 goal," Doyle said. "But the no-hitter was a nice add-on."
