Thurston signs with Colorado Eagles

The Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League signed Brett Thurston on Wednesday.

The 6-foot, 220-pound defenseman played for the University of Calgary the past three seasons.

In 124 games with the Dinos, the 25-year-old had 34 points and 126 penalty minutes.

Colorado won its fourth consecutive Northwest Division title Tuesday when it beat the Oklahoma City Blazers 6-1.

RAGE BEATS GORILLAS Craig Olynick had a short-handed goal for the Rocky Mountain Rage (16-35-6) in a 3-1 CHL win against the Amarillo Gorillas (28-26-4) at the Broomfield Event Center.

HODGE TO ALBUQUERQUE The NBA Development League's Albuquerque Thunderbirds acquired 6-7 guard Julius Hodge, the 20th selection in the 2005 NBA draft by the Nuggets. In 11 NBADL appearances this season, Hodge has averaged 21.5 minutes, 12.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.6 assists a game.

CU TENNIS WINS The 29th-ranked University of Colorado women's tennis team (10-3) recorded its biggest upset in school history, knocking off No. 12 William & Mary 4-3 in Boulder.

MINES TOPS METRO STATE The Colorado Mines baseball team pounded out 15 hits and six pitchers combined on a seven-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead the Orediggers to a 9-3 win against Metro State in nonconference game in Golden.

CC MEN ROLL Freshman attacker Brendan Gangl and junior midfielder Hunter Combs scored three goals apiece to help Colorado College to an 8-6 victory against visiting Wheaton College in a Division III men's lacrosse game.

CC WOMEN ROMP The Colorado College women's lacrosse team scored 11 consecutive goals to pull away from Dallas, winning 16-3 in Colorado Springs.

RAMS SWEEP The Colorado State women's tennis team swept Dayton 7-0 in Hilton Head, S.C.

HOLMSTROM TOP CHOICE University of Denver junior Adam Holmstrom was named the Sun Belt Conference men's tennis player of the week.

Metro State senior Braden Ham was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball pitcher of the week.

Runner Stephen Pifer, women's basketball forward Jackie McFarland and slalom skier Lucie Zikova were named CU athletes of the week.
