Published March 15, 2007 at midnight

A 78-year-old Highlands Ranch man who suffers from Alzheimer’s and dementia was found safe in San Diego, Calif., about 3:30 a.m. this morning.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy Cocha Heyden said Roger Mattoon was found in a parking lot and believing he needed help, a citizen called for medical attention. He was taken to a hospital where he is resting comfortably.

She said it’s believed Mattoon boarded a Greyhound bus for his travel to San Diego.

Douglas County sheriff’s investigators had Mattoon’s name flagged in the Veteran Administration’s (VA) database as a missing person. When he entered the hospital, he only had his VA identification card on him.

When hospital staff ran his name through the VA database it showed that he was considered to be a missing person out of Colorado. The family was then notified that Mattoon had been found.
