Cherry Creek relies on Danneberg's burst
Published March 15, 2007 at midnight
CENTENNIAL After playing more than 105 minutes of soccer Wednesday afternoon, Cherry Creek's Caroline Danneberg was close to exhaustion and her legs felt weak. But she still had enough left in her tank to help the Bruins avoid going to a shootout with upstart Denver East in the first round of the Warrior Invitational at Arapahoe High School.
Danneberg took a great pass from Kaylee Boryla and buried it in the top right corner of the goal to lift Cherry Creek, ranked seventh in Class 5A, to a 1-0 double- overtime victory in the 108th minute.
"It was tiring but it was fun," said Danneberg, a junior striker. "I looked up at the clock and saw there was only 2 minutes to go, and I started freaking out. But Kaylee gave me a great ball, and I was finally able to finish one."
Up until the goal, it had been a frustrating afternoon for Danneberg and Boryla. Both had used tremendous speed to make runs down the sides on the Angels but to little avail.
Denver East did a good job recovering, and junior defender Alex McHenry broke up several good scoring opportunities.
"I love playing with Kaylee up top, but for some reason, we've had trouble finishing," Danneberg said. "We had a lot of good runs but just weren't able to convert."
They had no such trouble on the winning goal. With both teams slowing down, Boryla was able to intercept a clearing try deep in Angels territory and chipped it ahead to a wide-open Danneberg, who drilled a laser that Denver East keeper Mackenzie Hall had no chance to stop.
There were very few scoring chances on either side during regulation.
After a feeling-out process at the start, the Angels actually seemed to control the flow during most of the first half.
Kate Buss, Elle Emery and Emily Maas kept the action on the Bruins' end of the field but couldn't get a shot on goal.
Denver East had only one shot on goal during the game, while Cherry Creek fired off nine before getting one past Hall.
"We would have liked to have got the win, but we can take some good things from this," Angels coach Beth Hinz said. "What's going to take us a long way this year is our heart and determination."
