Man killed by Lakewood police officers
Published March 14, 2007 at midnight
LAKEWOOD - A man was shot to death Tuesday by police after he threatened officers with a handgun, said Steve Davis, of the Lakewood Police Department.
Davis said police received a call at 10:50 a.m. from a woman who said she was being threatened by a man with a gun in a domestic quarrel.
Neighbors, who declined to be identified, said the armed man was the woman's husband.
Davis said two officers arrived at the scene at 10:58 a.m., saw a man with a gun get out of a car and point the weapon at the officers.
"Both agents fired at the man. The man fired at the officers. At this point we don't know if he fired first," said Davis.
The man was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital, Davis said. The man hasn't been identified, and Davis said he didn't know which hospital the man was taken to.
The two officers, who weren't injured, haven't been identified, he said.
"The two officers are being interviewed and will be on administrative leave during the investigation," Davis said.
Davis said the officers are experienced police officers. He said both would be encouraged to seek counseling.
"It affects everyone differently," Davis said. "It can be an emotional thing for an officer. No one wants to be involved in a shooting."
The shooting death by Lakewood police was the second this year.
There was one shooting death by Lakewood police in 2006 and none in the 10 previous years, Davis said.
In the first shooting death this year, two officers were summoned to a home for alleged domestic violence and shot and killed James Abeyta after he threatened them with knives.
