Grandma accused of molesting grandkids

Published March 14, 2007 at midnight

A 49-year-old Clifton grandmother is in the Mesa County jail today on allegations of sexual exploitation, assault and procurement of at least two of her grandchildren through a Canadian man arrested in Toronto for alleged Internet trafficking of child pornography.

Debra Slaughenhaupt admitted to investigators she had her grandchildren touch her breasts and other private parts while a bedroom Web cam sent the images to ''good guy matt,'' identified as Matt Hughes, 26, who was arrested in December by authorities in Toronto, Ontario, according to an arrest affidavit.

Mesa County investigators received copies of Internet information identifying her as ''shortstockdeb57'' who had communicated with Hughes. When they went to Slaughenhaupt's home on Tuesday, they found five children younger than 15 in the house, along with ''molded food in about every room'' and ''feces on the floor,'' along with computers in both the living room and master bedroom.

They interviewed Slaughenhaupt who admitted to the sexual conduct, the affidavit says, while specialists at the Western Slope Center for Children interviewed the grandchildren.

Various incidents involving the children occurred via Internet between Slaughenhaupt and Hughes between last April 29 and Dec. 1, the affidavit said.

Allegations against Slaughenhaupt include sexual assault on a child in position of trust, sexual assault on a child as a pattern of abuse, sexual exploitation of a child and procurement of a child for sexual exploitation. Also alleged are five misdemeanor charges of child abuse stemming from the alleged condition of the home.
