Cub Scouts' predicament undone by contributors

Published March 14, 2007 at midnight

The kindness of strangers has bailed out Cub Scout Pack 459 after a former troop treasurer allegedly took $2,231 from its bank account.

The 18 members of the Littleton pack have received more than $3,535 of donations, said Rhonda Slade, the Cub Scouts' new treasurer.

"People have been so generous," Slade said Tuesday. "We are so thankful to everyone for stepping forward and being there for us. I haven't been able to get back to people. I'm trying my best."

A man donated $2,500 and added $100 for a pizza party for the boys, ages 6 to 10. Her postman gave the pack $50, Slade said.

Crown Trophy, of Littleton, donated trophies and medallions for the upcoming Pinewood Derby.

Tricia McVay, 26, the troop's former treasurer, has been identified as the suspect, Jefferson County sheriff's spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said.

Kelley said the sheriff's office will ask the district attorney to file felony theft charges against McVay, who allegedly withdrew money and withheld deposits from the account.

"She has been cooperating with the investigation," Kelley said.

Cub Scout Pack 459 meets March 21 and will learn of the public's generosity then, Slade said. At the meeting, a photographer will take a group picture.

"We're going to take that picture and make thank-you cards to send out to everyone who called and donated," she said. "We are so grateful."

If there's a surplus, the Cub Scouts and the pack leaders will come up with ideas about whom to give the extra money to at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
