Q: When do you consider a cook a chef? - Berk Tuttle, Ogden, Utah
Answer: There are some who assert that one earns the right to be called "chef" upon receiving a culinary degree; there are others who insist that everyone who works in a kitchen, whether head chef or line cook, is a cook and should both be called a cook and be proud of being a cook. The safest bet is to refer to only head chefs or sous-chefs as chefs, and the rest as cooks.
