GAME DAY

Correction
A photo on this story was former Colorado Rockies pitcher Javier Lopez, now with Boston, not former Rockies catcher Javier Lopez.

Right-handed pitcher Dave Veres was scratched from a scheduled appearance in Monday's 6-5, 10-inning loss to Arizona at Hi Corbett Field because of a tightness in his right forearm that is not considered serious. . . . Todd Helton played in his second game in a row and was 3-for-3 with a run scored. "At one point he had all our hits," manager Clint Hurdle said. "I think he's going to make it." . . . Right-hander Aaron Cook became the first Rockies pitcher to work five innings, giving up three runs. He threw 68 pitches. . . . Reliever Darren Clarke suffered a strained right groin in the eighth inning and was charged with two runs that gave Arizona a 5-4 lead.

ROSTER CUTS

9 position players were removed from the Rockies' spring roster Monday. Catcher Javier Lopez was released. Shortstop Johnathan Herrera, second baseman Jayson Nix, first baseman Joe Coshansky, third baseman Ian Stewart, and outfielders Jeff Salazar, Sean Barker, Matt Miller and Seth Smith were sent to the minor league camp.

FAMILIAR FACES

Eric Young and Dante Bichette, original Rockies, were visitors to camp on Monday. Young was making his stop as part of a tour of spring camps that he is doing in his new job as an analyst for ESPN. Bichette's son Danny is on a team of 14-year-olds that played in a weekend tournament in Phoenix, and Bichette brought the team to Hi Corbett to see a game.

HE SAID IT

"We told him, 'Paint yourself in the corner in the bullpen. Don't paint yourself in the corner on the mound."

Hurdle, on left-handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt, who has retired nine of the last 10 hitters he has faced after giving up three runs before getting an out three appearances ago.
