Police kill armed Lakewood man

Published March 13, 2007 at midnight

LAKEWOOD — A Lakewood man who police said threatened them with a handgun was shot to death this morning, police spokesman Steve Davis said.

Police received a call at 10:50 a.m. from a woman at a home in the 3200 block of South Indiana Street who said she was being threatened with a gun.

Neighbors said they believe the armed man was the woman’s husband.

Two officers arrived at the scene at 10:58 a.m., were confront by a man who'd been sitting in a car, police reported.

"Both agents fired at the man. At this point we don’t know if he fired first," said Davis.

The man was dead on arrival at a hospital, Davis said. He hasn't been identified.

"The two officers are being interviewed and will be on administrative leave during the investigation," said Davis. The identities of the two have not been released, but Davis said they were both experienced.

"It affects everyone differently," said Davis. "It can be an emotional thing for an officer. No one wants to be involved in a shooting."
