Death of jailed man being investigated
Published March 13, 2007 at midnight
Lakewood police and the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office are investigating the death Monday of a 29-year-old jail inmate who'd been arrested the day before on drugs charges.
Joshua Giebel had been stopped Sunday evening for several traffic violations while riding his motorcycle near West Alameda Avenue and South Depew Street. Police said he was in possession of suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia .
Lakewood police spokesman Steve Davis said during processing at the jail, Giebel lost consciousness and was taken to a local hospital where he died.
While investigating the time period in which Giebel was at the Lakewood Police Department, a second arrestee in the holding cell with Giebel told Lakewood officers he saw Giebel work his arm around a partition, retrieve methamphetamine from an adjacent area and swallow it.
An official cause of death has not yet been determined.
