Huffaker leads DU to gymnastics victory

Heather Huffaker won three events in a single meet for the first time this season to lead the 14th-ranked University of Denver women's gymnastics team to a 194.750-194.525 victory against No. 20 Illinois on Sunday at Hamilton Gymnasium.

Huffaker won the vault, balance beam and floor exercise title as well as the all-around title for the Pioneers (10-6).

STINE STANDS TALL Greg Stine won the floor exercise and all- around title as the Air Force men's gymnastics team produced its best team score this season in a 206.500-196.500 loss to host Illinois-Chicago.

PIONEERS TAKE FIFTH Emily Hoeper tied for a fifth-place individual finish to lead the DU women's golf squad to a fifth-place team finish in the "Mo" Morial Invitational tournament in Bryan, Texas.

Arizona State won the tournament, 29 shots ahead of the Pioneers.

"This golf course is big and hard and the wind really blew (Sunday), making the course more difficult," DU coach Sammie Chergo said.

FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY Ali Flury scored five goals to power the 16th-ranked DU women's lacrosse team (5-1) to a 17-9 victory against Stony Brook (3-1) in Stony Brook, N.Y.

TIGERS ROLL Shawn Maloney recorded four goals to help the Colorado College men's lacrosse team (1-1) win 12-5 against Moravian College (0-4) in Colorado Springs.

BEARS SKIDDING Trey Keene slapped four hits but the Northern Colorado baseball team (5-7) lost its third in a row, 4-3 against Lamar (12-6) in Beaumont, Texas.

FALCONS STUMBLE Karl Bolt had three hits but the Air Force Academy baseball team (5-15) lost 6-4 to Wright State (6-4) at Falcon Field.

GRIZZLY RUNNERS REPEAT Adams State runner Aucencio Martinez (mile) and Nick Lara (800 meters) successfully defended their respective national titles to lead the Grizzlies men's track and field squad to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships in Boston.

The Adams State women claimed fifth place in the team standings.

DRYER THIRD Gunnison runner -Elva Dryer finished third Saturday in the USA 15-kilometer championships in Jacksonville, Fla., 2 minutes, 20 seconds behind winner Deena Kastor.
