Shortstop Tulowitzki hit with pitch

PEORIA, Ariz. — Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki suffered no obvious fracture when he was hit with a pitch on his right forearm Saturday but will be X-rayed Sunday.

San Diego Padres reliever Doug Brocail hit Tulowitzki on the outside of his right forearm with a pitch in the fifth inning. General manager Dan O'Dowd, who was at the game, said Tulowitzki was examined here manually by Dr. Tom Hackett, one of the Rockies orthopedists.

O’Dowd said Hackett did "a ton of different movements" with Tulowitzki's wrist and arm, did not detect any fracture and thought Tulowitzki would be sore for a few days.

While that was obviously the best-case scenario, it was not conclusive.

"You could do all that," O'Dowd said, "and it still could be fractured when they do an X-ray."

Tulowitzki, who finished last season as the Rockies starting shortstop and is competing for the job this spring with Clint Barmes, doubled home a run on his first before getting hit by Brocail. Tulowitzki fell to the ground immediately and stayed there several minutes, kicking a leg at one point in intense pain. After being examined by Hackett, Tulowitzki was sent back to Tucson before the conclusion of the 11-3 loss suffered by a Rockies' split-squad.
