Brown lifts Limon to 2A girls championship
Published March 11, 2007 at midnight
PUEBLO -- No matter the circumstances, the Limon High School girls basketball team finds ways to win state championships.
That was never more apparent than Saturday night.
Amanda Brown poured in a game-best 28 points, powering the Badgers to a 65-58 double-overtime victory over Wray in the Class 2A state championship game at the Colorado State Fair Events Center.
"This team just refuses to lose," said Limon coach Mark Brown, who just completed his 15th season. "I have said that a number of times."
Brown speaks the truth.
This was Limon's third consecutive state title and fifth in six years.
"I think the experience we have had at the other state tournaments really helped us again (Saturday night)," Amanda Brown said. "We never let ourselves panic and just kept our poise and played the game. It does feel sweeter everytime we win state."
Limon ends its season with a 24-2 record, while Wray, which was a state power in the late 1970s, capped its stellar season at 22-4.
"We had some opportunites to win the game (Saturday night), but it just didn't happen for us," Wray coach David Reed said. "I am still so proud of the way my girls competed (Saturday night) and the entire state tournament. No one gave us much respect and we came up here and showed people how good of team we are."
It appeared that Wray was going to win this contest in regulation when Erin Neumann shot a running 3-pointer from the right side of the top of the key just before the buzzer. The ball bounced off the back of the rim and hit the ground. More surprising to Reed and the Wray faithful was that a foul wasn't called on Limon's Hannah Naylor.
The game went into the first overtime tied at 49-49 and it remained deadlocked at 56 when Naylor shot an airball from the top the key as time expired in the first OT.
"When we went into the huddle, we knew we needed to step things up," Amanda Brown said. "We didn't want the game to go into three overtimes."
Limon's Camille Grimes responded.
The 5-foot-9 junior sank a huge trey, giving the Badgers a 59-56 lead with 2:40 left in the second overtime. Grimes then made a free throw to put Limon ahead 60-56 at the 1:30 mark.
Wray unraveled from there and Michelle Haley and Brown concluded the scoring with five free throws.
"We have such a great basketball tradition here at Limon and we didn't want to be the team that lost in the state finals," Amanda Brown said.
Coach Brown praised his team's performance in the clutch.
"I was getting a little nervous when it went into overtime," the coach said. "I have already forgotten how many overtimes we played. I just know the girls came through."
Wray's Erin Neumann (17), Stacy Post (16), and Christa Loyd (14) all scored in double-figures in the loss.
