Limon cruises by Holyoke
Wray advances by making its free throws late

PUEBLO - While some girls basketball teams never get to state, the Limon program expects to win titles.
The Badgers proved that again Friday night by muscling past Holyoke 42-28 in the Class 2A state semifinals at the Colorado State Fair Events Center.
"We know what it takes to win games here," said Limon coach Mark Brown, in his 15th season. "The thing that I was most pleased about (Friday night) was how we played defense."
Today, Limon (23-2) will try to win its fifth state championship in the past six years.
"My girls work hard all year to get here," Brown said. "They know once we get here, anything can happen."
It was the second time in as many years that Limon spoiled Holyoke's state run. Last season, the Badgers beat the Dragons 55-46 in the state championship game.
"Limon is a very good team, and we just couldn't make any shots (Friday night)," Holyoke coach Arlan Scholl said. "That's probably the worst that we have shot all season."
Amanda Brown, the coach's daughter, led Limon with 11 points, and Victoria Timm had 12 points for Holyoke (16-9).

WRAY 55, SANGRE DE CRISTO 51 - Wray made five free throws in the final 49 seconds to upset No. 1-ranked Sangre de Cristo in the semifinals.
"We're excited about making it to the state championship; that was our goal all season long," Wray coach Dave Reed said. "I knew that my girls would start making those free throws at the end, and that's exactly what they did."
A three-pointer by Sangre de Cristo's Jodi Beiriger cut the Wray (22-3) lead to 50-49 with 1:09 remaining in the fourth quarter. Erin Neumann added a free throw for the Eagles with 49 seconds left to push it to 51-49.
The Thunderbirds (22-2) turned over the ball on their next possession, then fouled Krista Loyd with 43.1 seconds left. Loyd made one free throw, giving the Eagles a 52-49 edge.
After another empty possession for Sangre de Cristo, Wray's Kaitlin Neumann iced the game with a free throw at the 27.6-second mark.
"When Kaitlin put us up 53-49, I felt pretty good about things," Reed said.
Troy Geiser, Sangre de Cristo's coach, was gracious in defeat.
"This was a great basketball game," Geiser said. "It's not like I can say we should have done one thing or another, we missed some opportunities there at the end, but Wray was just a good team that beat us."
Loyd ended with 18 points, while Brittany Brown paced Sangre de Cristo with 22 points, 14 of which came in the first quarter.
