Lewis orchestrates Kent Denver's big upset
Published March 10, 2007 at midnight
FORT COLLINS - Kyle Lewis isn't ready for his high school career to end.
Lewis, an all-state guard at Kent Denver, scored 25 points to lead the Sun Devils to a 46-42 upset against Colorado Springs Christian in the Class 3A basketball state semifinals Friday night at Moby Arena.
Lewis' performance came one night after he scored 36 in a win against Roaring Fork and only two weeks after he suffered a serious neck injury that left him temporarily paralyzed.
Although he's not fully recovered, Lewis is leading an inspired Kent Denver (20-6) squad that will take on Eaton tonight for the title.
"Not yet. I'm not ready for it to end," said Lewis, who has signed with the University of Denver. "I know I have a big future at DU the next four years, but nothing compares to this."
While Lewis led the way, he received plenty of help from his teammates, particularly in the fourth quarter. Will Deevy hit two huge baskets, scoring seven of his 11 points in the period, and the Sun Devils received clutch free throws from Ben Stewart and Gunner Wiebe.
In addition, Max Holz came off the bench and hit a layup with 18 seconds remaining that gave Kent Denver a 44-39 lead.
The Sun Devils needed all those points, as Matt Baarts did all he could to bring Colorado Springs Christian back. Baarts hit four consecutive shots in the fourth, including a three-pointer with 9.1 seconds showing that cut the lead to 44-42.
But Lewis hit two free throws seconds later to seal the victory.
The Lions (24-2) worked the ball inside early, using their height advantage to jump to a 9- 4 lead. Taylor Broekhuis hit two baskets early, and Jeremy Mellema connected on a layup.
Kent Denver evened the score at 11-11 by the end of the first quarter as Lewis scored seven in the period.
He hit his second three-pointer of the contest early in the second quarter to put Kent Denver up 14-13, and then drilled a long jumper with 4:12 to play in the half to push the score to 18-15.
Broekhuis scored a short time later, and then both teams went scoreless the final 3:58 of the second quarter.
Lewis started to heat up near the end of the third quarter, scoring the final eight points of the period to give Kent Denver a 28-24 lead.
