GAME DAY

The Rockies beat the Seattle Mariners in 10 innings at Peoria, Ariz. Solo homers in the ninth by Alvin Colina and Ian Stewart off Chris Reitsma gave the Rockies a 5-4 lead, but the Mariners tied it against Ryan Speier.

Cory Sullivan led off the 10th with a single, took second on a wild pitch, third on Jonathan Herrera's infield single and scored on Ryan Spilborgh's sacrifice fly. . . . Steve Finley went 3-for-4 with a double, raising his spring training average to .471 (8-for-17).

THE BIG HURT

First base coach Glenallen Hill left the game in the fourth after Alex Gomez's line drive struck Hill flush on the bone of his left elbow. Hill returned in the eighth but was in so much pain after the game, he said he used only his right hand to take his socks off. He said it was the hardest he ever had been hit by a baseball, playing football or anything else. Trainer Keith Dugger said X-rays could be taken after Hill is evaluated this morning.

NO PROBLEM

Ubaldo Jimenez, who pitched two scoreless innings, issued a walk and hit a batter to start his final inning. But he got Richie Sexson to hit into a double play and Ben Broussard to fly out. "A year ago, that turns into three runs or four runs," manager Clint Hurdle said. "Now, he was able to pinch it off. It's something we talked about previously, and that's one of the steps he was able to take."

SEEKING A SOLUTION

Hurdle said Clint Barmes, who singled sharply to right-center in the second, was "starting to slip and slide into his old habits." Hurdle said Barmes and hitting coach Alan Cockrell made a couple of adjustments that put Barmes in a better position at the plate the past couple of days. "And the swings he fired off in the game," Hurdle said, "were much crisper, much cleaner, much shorter."
