Cocaine found in 1-year-old girl

Published March 10, 2007 at midnight

Traces of cocaine were found in a 1-year-old Denver girl after a neighbor called police to report that the child had been crying all night, authorities say.

The girl's mother, Latasha Walker, 28, now faces child abuse charges.

She also faces charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after a 14-year-old relative told police that Walker had provided marijuana to him on several occasions.

Walker, who is being held on a $10,000 bond, was advised of the charges Friday in Denver County Court. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 30.

Authorities said the case came to light the morning of March 3, when police were called to an apartment complex on East Dartmouth Avenue. A neighbor told police that a child had been crying all night and that the neighbor was concerned there was no adult at home.

According to police, officers could hear the baby crying but couldn't get any response to their knocks and finally forced their way inside. There, they said, they found Walker, her young daughter and the 14-year-old boy.

The officers could smell marijuana and found suspected marijuana and paraphernalia in the apartment, according to a police probable-cause statement.

The girl was taken to Children's Hospital and tested positive for cocaine, police said. Both children were placed in protective custody.

"Our first priority is to keep the children safe," said Jamie Glennon, of the Denver Department of Human Services.

The child-abuse charge Walker faces is a misdemeanor, but contributing to the delinquency of a minor is a felony. If convicted on that charge, she could face two to six years in prison, said Lynn Kimbrough of the Denver district attorney's office.
