Simons: Bargains crystallize at Villa

Published March 10, 2007 at midnight

If your soul cries out for crystal and sterling but you're living in a glass-and-stainless world, this is your lucky week. International Villa, where the bridal registry can be cross-referenced with the social register, is celebrating its 30th year with its first wall- to-wall sale.

Everything in the store is reduced by 25 percent to 50 percent through March 17. The sale starts when the doors open at 9:30 a.m. today. If you have a few minutes to orient yourself, check out your options online at internationalvilla. com.

Nothing in the store is held back, but discounts apply only to in-stock merchandise. International Villa is at 239 Detroit St. in Cherry Creek North, 303-333-1524. Parking is free in the lot across the street.

While you're in the neighborhood, check out today's International Women's Day celebration at Ten Thousand Villages. The nonprofit, fair-trade gift shop at 2626 E. Third Ave., 303-316-8773, is spotlighting items from woman-centered economic initiatives throughout the world. Anyone who makes a purchase will receive a free Angel Pin.

Get the first look at two shipments of furniture when the doors open at 10 a.m. today at Joy's Consigned Furnishings, 5030 E. Hampden Ave. in the Happy Canyon Shopping Center, 303-757-7269. The model-home furniture from New Town Holdings is priced at half the discounted price the developers paid. The factory-closeout dining chairs, tables and prints from a well- known manufacturer are priced at half of retail.

It's a shame to let beautiful gowns languish in the back of the closet when some girls can't go to prom because they can't afford dresses. If you have any languishing gowns, call the Copper Fields Events Chateau at 720-898-8388. The director, Lakewood city councilwoman Cheryl Wise, will see that they go to girls who need them.

If, on the other hand, you're in need of a prom gown, mark your calendar for the Prom Dress Exchange, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 18 at the chateau, 4901 Marshall St., Wheat Ridge. The gowns are free, but a $10 donation would help pay for cleaning and storage.

Gifts for Yule promoter Samantha Falletti is back for the second Spring Fling, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Denver Turnverein, 1570 Clarkson St. You'll find folk art, antiques, hand-knit items, jewelry, Easter items, vintage linens, children's clothing, flowers, pottery and more. Admission is free.

The youth of Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church plan to head to New Orleans for a work detail. To raise money for their expenses, they're having a tag sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the church, 1980 Dahlia St. Multiple households have donated all kinds of good stuff, including tools, toys, bicycles, TVs, books, computer equipment, small appliances, furniture, sporting goods and children's clothing.

A different kind of shopping is available from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at FlatIron Crossing. The Family Festival offers parents a chance to check out camps, birthday-party vendors and other support staff as their children get their faces painted and jump on air castles. Today's version is free. Next week's version, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 18 at the Wildlife Experience, costs $1 per person but includes museum admission. For more information, go to Kids Pages.org or call 303-277-0053.
