Routing Jaguars, Eagles say it all
Published March 9, 2007 at midnight
PUEBLO - The colossal matchup didn't live up to its billing.
Rob Lewis poured in a game- best 30 points as top-seeded Evangelical Christian hammered defending state champion Jefferson Academy 70-43 on Thursday in the Class 2A quarterfinals at the Colorado State Fair Events Center.
"We got a tough draw having to get the defending state champions, but I just told my guys to just do what we do," Evangelical Christian coach Don Bost said. "We were able to push the ball up the court and get some transition layups, and Rob Lewis is a kid who can do it all."
Lewis, a 6-foot-7 post player, scored 12 points in the opening half as the Eagles took a 28-23 lead. They then blew open the game in the third quarter.
Lewis had nine points in the third as the Eagles (20-4) built a 48-34 advantage.
"You have to give ECA credit. they came out with some fire and were ready to play," Jefferson Academy coach Mark Sharpley said. "Rob (Lewis) played hard from the start of the game to the finish, and we just couldn't hit any shots."
Evangelical Christian, which won consecutive titles in 2004 and 2005, avenged its loss to the Jaguars (17-7) in the semifinals last year.
