DU trails Dartmouth at NCAA skiing meet

University of Denver skier Adam Cole won the men's giant slalom title Thursday, lifting the Pioneers into second place at the NCAA Skiing Championships in Attitash, N.H.

DU is threatening first-place Dartmouth for the tourney lead. The Pioneers have 329 points, one behind Dartmouth's 330. Utah (280) and the University of Colorado (275) follow in third and fourth.

Western State's Sarah Schaedler won the women's giant slalom title Thursday, the school's first NCAA title in an alpine event.

DU's Rene Reisshauer won the men's 10-kilometer freestyle cross country title Wednesday.

"I'm absolutely ecstatic," DU alpine coach Andy LeRoy said. "All of the skiers are ready to go and very excited about the next two days."

Defending national champion CU knows it has a steep hill to climb.

"We're not giving up hope at all and we're still going to fight for it," said Buffaloes coach Richard Rokos. "We may very well have to pull a rabbit out of the hat."

PLAINSMEN ROLL The fourth-ranked Northeastern Junior College men's basketball team has earned a berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament after winning the Region IX title in Scottsbluff, Neb.

The Sterling-based Plainsmen (31-1) will compete in the

NJCAA nationals March 20-24 in Hutchinson, Kan., after winning 90-77 against Casper (Wyo.) College.

"It was a huge relief to get the (regional) title, because that was our goal all year," Northeastern coach Eddie Trenkle said.

DIAZ HONORED Mesa State third baseman Anita Diaz, a Northridge High School graduate, has been named the softball player of the week by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Keith Nelson, an Erie High School graduate, has been named the baseball pitcher of the week by the RMAC.

CHL'S BEST Colorado Eagles center Riley Nelson was rated as the Central Hockey League's best skater and top penalty killer in a poll of coaches, players and front-office officials.

Nelson also was judged the CHL's third-best overall player, behind Youngstown's Jeff Christian and Arizona's Brent Kelly.

Eagles teammate Ryan Tobler was named the league's best power forward and best heavyweight fighter.

The Loveland-based club's "Eagles Chicks" were named the league's top cheerleaders, and the club's followers at the Budweiser Events Center earned the "Best Fans" award.

The Broomfield Event Center, home of the Rocky Mountain Rage, was named the third-best arena in the CHL, and the Rage was judged to have the best equipment and training staff.

RAGE WINS Craig Olynick scored with 1:47 left in the game to lift the CHL's Rage (15-34-5) to a 4-3 home victory against the Wichita Thunder (25-25-7).

RAPIDS TICKETS The Colorado Rapids will begin selling single- game tickets at 10 a.m. Saturday for the upcoming Major League Soccer season.

The club will play this year at newly constructed Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, an 18,000-seat venue.

OUTLAWS ADD COACH Jim Beardmore has been hired as coach of Major League Lacrosse's Denver Outlaws for the 2007 season, replacing Jarred Testa, who led the club to a 10-2 mark last summer.
