Foul felony: Cub Scouts ripped off

Published March 9, 2007 at midnight

There's no Cub Scout merit badge for being ripped off, but Troop 459 is learning to deal with the news that a former pack leader emptied the bank account.

"It's tragic, but we are showing them that we stay together as a big family and rise above it," said Rhonda Slade, the Littleton troop's new treasurer.

The troop of 18 boys, ages 6 to 10, learned that $2,231 was missing last month when the bank called about overdraft fees.

The illegal withdrawals started last year, taking $1,231 the pack had earned from its popcorn sales in November and December.

The pack's account also had an additional $1,000 carried over from last year, but that vanished with a check written for cash Dec. 6, Rhonda Slade said.

Jim Shires of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the theft, a felony, was under investigation. He couldn't provide additional information.

"We were robbed - I didn't know what to think," said Preston Slade, 10, a pack member and Rhonda Slade's son. "No one should do that to Cub Scouts." The troop closed the drained bank account, and began to deal with operating costs and no money.

Troop 459 wasn't able to pay Dutch Creek Elementary School $12 an hour for meeting in the gym from November to February, but a Littleton car dealer covered the cost.

Rhonda Slade said the school has waived the fees for March, April and May.

The pack planned to cancel the annual awards gathering, the Blue and Gold Banquet, Feb. 21 at Ken Caryl Middle School, but Ted's Montana Grill, King Soopers and parents donated food, she said.

"We gave out badges and awards that we'd paid for before the money disappeared," said Rhonda Slade.

The pack's annual Pinewood Derby is coming up April 18, and the Scouts are fashioning cars from wood blocks to race. There might be no trophies or ribbons, however.

"The kids understand what happened and they are so willing to do what it takes to get it back," said Rhonda Slade. "No matter what happens you can rise above it."
