what i'm doing tonight
ROBERT "THE GOOSE" GUZMAN
One of the most in-demand musicians in the state - he's in three bands - The Goose is also a stone pro at the night life. We condensed his usual three-day session of weekend shindiggery to a more mortal, and printable, two days.
What did you do last weekend? Friday I started at The Squire to see my friend Nick, a bartender there. Nick is also the consummate drinker - one of my inspirations. The Goose posse convenes and we hit The Meadowlark and then head over to Delany's for some righteous Demon Funkies. We manage to get in on last call at the Old Curtis Street Bar before we close the night down at Barracuda's with some late-night eating. Saturday, I stop at 3 Kings Tavern to say hello and for a couple of quick ones, and then I end up at the Horseshoe. I hook up with my posse again and we head over to The Meadowlark for a couple of sets of Astrophagus. Then we stop at the Cricket on the Hill for The Skivies. We make it to last call at The Satire and head over to Pete's for coffee and a lengthy convivial discussion.
Whew. What's up next? I'll probably start this afternoon with a nice dirty martini or glass of red wine. Then I'll be stopping in to The Squire to see Nick for some kind cocktails and shots. Later in the evening, another of my bands, Hero to Zero, is playing Tommypalooza at Toad Tavern. All proceeds go to charity, and the host is Tommy Nahulu, a fantastic artist and one of the best local music supporters ever. Saturday night, maybe The Aquasonics at Skylark and the Last Seen at 3 Kings.
THE FLOBOTS
First off, how many hip-hop acts have a viola player? The Flobots are gaining altitude in the local scene thanks to their hard work, idiosyncratic style and willingness to embrace stringed instruments. Check them out this Saturday at Herman's Hideaway and online at www.flobots.com.
What did you do last weekend? We spent much of last weekend in the studio, working on our new record (out late this summer). Guitarist Andy Guerrero, vocalist Brer Rabbit, and vocalist Jonny 5 also attended Clay Kirkland's concert at the Mercury Cafe. Clay is one of the best harmonica players of all time, and he lives right here in Denver. Afterwards, Andy hit the Celtic where he saw a mediocre cover band, Brer Rabbit popped over to Dance-o-tron where DJ Sara T was spinning, and Jonny 5 grabbed some sushi with an old fried who long ago taught him how to rap in Japanese. Bassist Jesse Walker base jumped off the cash register building. He was unharmed and exhilarated. Drummer Kenny Ortiz completed his first winter ascent of Longs Peak. Trumpet player Joe Ferrone spent the weekend grooming his crew cut, and jamming with his friends in the Air Force.
What's up next? This weekend we have one goal: rock Herman's Hideaway to its foundation. We have been writing and recording for six consecutive weeks, and this has produced two things: 1) an abundance of great new material, and 2) a stir-crazy rap group that is ready to launch an audience into the atmosphere.
hey, dj...
DJ Brian Howe hosts a weekly mixshow on XM Radio (Channel 81) at midnight on Fridays, has a regular Saturday residency at Rise Nightclub (1909 Blake St.) and is a full-time producer for CAPP Records, where he develops the electronic sounds of the future. These are currently his three favorite tracks:
Groovstylerz We Are Family (2-4 grooves mix) - It takes a classic sample from the disco hit by Sister Sledge and places it into a dirty, electro dance track.
Brooklyn Bounce Sex, Bass & Rock N' Roll - This is an aggressive "Hands Up" German techno track that incorporates heavy metal guitar, progressive trance, melodic vocals and cutting-edge break beats and builds.
Bob Sinclair Rock This Party - I love this song because it combines many different flavors of dance music: reggae, dance, and that classic C+C Music Factory sample that everyone knows and loves. Always a crowd pleaser!
drink up!
Sarah Arlt at Fado gets the predictable orders for Guinness, Jameson, Bushmills, more Guinness - but given her druthers would mix those thirsty patrons her special creation, the Voodoo.
"I'm a big fan of the blueberry vodka," she said. Who isn't, besides maybe blueberries? This versatile cocktail can be served as a shot or a full drink, and contains a wicked mixture of the following:
Blueberry vodka
Black currant juice
Tonic water
Soda water
