Provizer: Elling goes Underground

Published March 9, 2007 at midnight

Kurt Elling has dominated recent polls for best male jazz vocalist, and you can hear why Wednesday when the singer pulls into the Soiled Dove Underground.

With his new Concord CD, Nightmoves, about to be released, Elling and his trio hit the stage at 7401 E. First Ave., below the Tavern Lowry. Tickets to the 8 p.m. concert cost $45 reserved/$30 general admission. Information: 303-366-0007.

Elling's appearance certainly makes for a tasty musical entree, but it's only one of the items available on a rather amazing menu of events scheduled for the week. Other shows vying for our attention:

The prodigious young pianist Eldar Djangirov, who just goes by the name Eldar, performs at Dazzle, 930 Lincoln St. at 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday with his traveling band made up of drummer Todd Strait and bassist Earl Travis. ($15, 303-839-5100).

At 7 and 9 p.m. Tuesday, the engaging trumpeter Ralph Alessi is at Dazzle with a powerhouse quintet featuring Ravi Coltrane on saxophone, Andy Milne on piano, Ben Street on bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums. All of the band members have impressive musical credentials, working with people such as Don Byron, Steve Coleman and Roscoe Mitchell and others. ($20/$15 Creative Music Works members).

At 7 and 9 tonight, the fine, visiting saxophonist George Garzone, supported by the Dana Landry Trio, is at Dazzle ($10).

At 9 p.m. Thursday, cornetist Ron Miles and saxophonist Fred Hess join the Antwon Owens Trio at Dazzle ($10).

Moving from Dazzle to El Chapultepec, the strong trumpet player Bobby Shew visits the old Pec, 20th and Market streets, at 8 tonight with the Marc Sabatella Quartet, and then shifts to the Pec Too, West 38th Avenue and Perry Street, at 8 p.m. Saturday for some fun with Pat Bianchi and Jim White. Speaking of El Chapultepec Too, the club in the Highland neighborhood expands its music schedule this week to include a regular evening of Latin jazz on Sundays at 7 p.m. with Freddy Rodriguez.

On the smooth side of the music, saxophonist Boney James is at the Paramount Theatre, 1621 Glenarm Place, at 8 p.m. Saturday. ($29.75-$49.75, 303-830-8497).

OUTSIDE OF DENVER: The large-scale "Weekend of Jazz" hosted by guitarist Earl Klugh at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs features Klugh and singer Steve Tyrell at 8 tonight. Then, at 8 p.m. Saturday, monster trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and his band share the program with singer KEM ($59, 1-719-577-5733). After the concerts, there's more music from Dotsero tonight and singer/pianist Aslyn on Saturday.

The technically innovative guitarist Stanley Jordan swings by Boulder's Fox Theatre, 1135 13th St., at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday ($14, 303-443-3399). On March 16, Jordan, a relative of former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb, also performs at Soiled Dove Underground.

When the snows began in late December, one of the victims of the weather was a scheduled "New Orleans Christmas Gumbo and Benefit Concert" featuring saxophonist Frederick "Shep" Sheppard. About a month after that canceled event, the New Orleans saxophonist, who worked with Fats Domino, died. He had just completed the tracks for his first recording session.

This week, Shep's New Orleans Herd featuring trumpeter Kid Merv tours Colorado to raise money for a scholarship and for the post-production of the late saxophonist's CD. The tour, with all tickets priced at $10, begins in Colorado Springs at 5 tonight and 6 p.m. Saturday at Fine Arts Center Modern, 121 S. Tejon St. (719-634-5581). On Sunday at 8 p.m., the Crescent City crowd moves to Trilogy, 2017 13th St. in Boulder where all tickets for the canceled show will be honored (303-473-9463). Then at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Shep's men hit the Aggie Theatre, 204 S. College St. in Fort Collins (970-482-8300). The Colorado tour wraps up at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Denver's Oriental Theatre, 4335 W. 44th Ave. (303-455-2124).
