Published March 8, 2007 at midnight

A Paonia man was killed Tuesday when the car he was a passenger in went off Colorado 92 and rolled multiple times as it tumbled 800 feet into the Black Canyon.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported this morning that Alfred Rankin II, 36, was killed and the driver, Leticia Rankin, 29, of Paonia, survived when the Dodge Durango she was driving went out of control on a downhill curve and plunged into the canyon.

The Colorado State Patrol reported there was no guardrail on the right shoulder where the SUV left the highway.

Rankin suffered bumps and bruises and was not seriously injured. She was taken to Delta County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Both individuals were wearing seat belts, the state patrol reported.

There was no evidence of drugs or alcohol being a factor in the crash, according to the state patrol.
